Star Kayaks

Be Safe

Kayak safety is our concern but your responsibility.

Through the Star Kayak design and build processes we have made kayak safety our primary focus.  Some of these features are easy to see, others you will feel on the water.

We've done our bit, now it's your turn.

  • Know your gear and how to use it. Make sure it's maintained and checked regularly
  • Always wear an approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  • Learn not only how to paddle but rescue techniques and First Aid
  • Check the weather conditions, and dress appropriately
  • Know where you're going and what hazards you may encounter
  • Let someone know your plans including return time and check in once you're safely back
  • Take a break, eat and stay hydrated.
  • Enjoy the surroundings.

You'll find the best people to help you are in your Kayak Stores and Clubs. They know the local area and what skills you'll need to stay safe. If nothing else you're bound to hear some great stories.

And remember, if you don't use it you'll loose it. Once learnt your skills need to be practiced.  So go out with some friends and plan to get wet.  Jump in a heated pool in winter or a calm shallow bay in summer and go over all those little things that could make the difference if trouble found you.
